Chapter 47 The Welfare Salt for Women
Chapter 47 The Welfare Salt for Women
Hui nodded and said, "Yes, it's a rule set by the tribe to encourage females to cultivate themselves. Unless there are special circumstances, females who don't come to pray for blessings won't receive salt."
"Only a five-day supply each time?" Since males eat raw meat and don't need salt, a five-day supply of salt for a female should be very little, right?
Hui smiled broadly: "This salt is a benefit the tribe provides to the females, which is a major reason why I joined the Tiger Beast Tribe. In my previous tribe, we had to sacrifice a lot of game every year to get salt, and many beastmen would die during the hunt. But the Tiger Beast Tribe never has to worry about salt. It's distributed here every five days, so we definitely can't finish it all. We can use this salt to make salted meat, so the meat we hunt in the fall can be saved for winter. We can also trade it with beastmen from other tribes for the items we want. Anyway, we'll always find a use for it."
Linni was a little surprised: "The Tiger Beast Tribe has really good benefits! Doesn't that mean everyone wants to join?"
“It’s only natural to want to join!” Hui nodded. “But the mountains are high and dangerous, and it’s very difficult for females to come to the Tiger Beast Tribe from other tribes.”
"Who is Na Hui?" Lin Ni asked, a little curious.
Hui was a little embarrassed: "I secretly followed the tribe's trading team to the Tiger Beast Tribe. In order to stay, I broke with my original tribe, and my partner also gave the Cat Beast Tribe a lot of supplies."
This sounds serious. Linni patted her hand and comforted her for a few moments, then asked about the tribe's situation. Hui said that they usually go to the nearby mountains to gather fruits and edible plants a few days after their prayers, but since the trade fair starts tomorrow, they probably won't be gathering anymore. She also told Linni several ways to preserve meat, such as making salted meat, air-dried meat, or cured meat. The two chatted as they walked down the mountain, not feeling tired at all, and reached the foot of the mountain in about half an hour.
Mei led a group of people distributing salt. In front of her was a large stone cauldron, which was half-filled with pale yellow coarse salt. There were less than ten women left to receive the salt. Some of them brought their own containers, such as fruit shells or stone bowls. Others who did not bring containers asked their partners to pick a large leaf. Mei filled a fruit shell with the leaf, which weighed about a pound. They wrapped it up and left.
Linni and Hui went to queue up together, and soon it was their turn. Hui took her salt, turned around and waved goodbye to Linni: "Lin, see you at the bonfire party tonight!"
"See you tonight, Hui!" When Lin Ni came up, she felt that she should be the last one.
Mei pulled out a leather bag from behind her: "I was wondering why I hadn't seen you come down for so long. Turns out you've made some new friends."
Lin Ni looked at the animal skin bag. If it contained salt, it would weigh ten or twenty pounds. She looked up at Mei and asked, "What's this?"
Mei handed the animal skin bag to Yao: "You're new to our tribe, so you'll get a little more the first time. After that, you'll get the same amount as everyone else."
"I see, thank you!" Yao said after seeing Lin Ni thank him. He then reached out to take the gift and thanked her in return.
Mei reminded him, "Remember to go to the bonfire party in front of Humen tonight."
Lin Ni nodded in agreement and walked away hand in hand with Yao. After they had walked about two hundred meters, Yao said, "Are you tired? Shall I carry you?"
Linni was indeed a little tired, and then looked at the animal skin bag in his hand: "I'm afraid you'll get tired."
Yao smiled, lowered his head, and whispered in her ear, "I never feel tired when I'm with you."
Lin Ni immediately blushed and punched him lightly: "Then carry me on your back."
Yao squatted down and carried Lin Ni on his back. She was wearing a long animal skin skirt that reached her calves, which made it a bit difficult to carry her. So Yao simply picked her up and carried her like an adult carrying a child, supporting her bottom with one hand and holding her back with the other. He also carried an animal skin bag containing twenty catties of salt in his hand, and then strode towards the North Mountain.
Lin Ni reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck. She never expected that an eighteen-year-old girl would be hugged like this. Lin Ni's face turned red, but this novel experience made her unable to control her smile.
Yao looked up and kissed her cheek: "Little Ni, you look so beautiful!"
Lin Ni also lowered her head and kissed Yao's forehead. She suddenly realized that Yao only called her Xiao Ni when they were alone. When they were with others, he called her Lin. How could this man be so considerate!
The two of them hugged each other and chatted happily. Lin Ni always felt particularly relaxed when she was with Yao. She knew that Ye was very good to her, but the feeling of being with Yao was different. When she was with Yao, she felt like she was in the throes of a passionate love. She especially wanted to be with him, talk to him, and do intimate things with him.
When Yan found Linni and Yao, this was the state they were in. Actually, male beastmen rarely get jealous of their mates' other partners (although he didn't know what jealousy was). As long as it wasn't too outrageous, they wouldn't mind. But the smiles on their faces at that moment were particularly irritating to Yan. He felt that Linni's eyes only had Yao, and she couldn't tolerate any other males. Yao said something that made Linni's face turn as sweet as honey. She first punched his shoulder, then lowered her head to kiss his forehead. Yao smiled and looked up, and then Linni kissed his lips.
When Yao looked up, he saw Yan. After Lin Ni kissed him, he suppressed his carefree smile and said softly to Lin Ni, "Lin, Yan is here."
Lin Ni's smile lost its cloying sweetness as she turned to Yan, a happy and expectant smile on her face: "Yan, you're here! Are you done with your work?"
Yan's disappointed heart was instantly healed by that smile, and she greeted him with a smile: "It's all done, but I don't know if it's what you wanted!"
Yao put Lin Ni down and said, "You've worked hard."
Yan looked at Lin Ni and said, "I'm building my own place to live, what's with all the hard work!"
Linni understood his implied meaning, but said noncommittally, "Let's go, I really want to see what it looks like when you build it."
Yan wasn't disappointed. He smiled at Yao and said, "Yao, congratulations on becoming an intermediate-level beastman!"
Yao smiled and replied, "Thank you!"
Yan said no more, transformed into his beast form, and carried the two of them up the mountainside. Yao and Lin Ni had already reached the foot of the mountain, and Yan flew up with them, arriving in just a few minutes.
Linni finally saw her first real home on the Orcish continent: a house built of stones the size of watermelons. Watermelons come in different sizes, and so do stones; gray, white, and brown stones of various colors were laid together, with barely visible gaps sealed with grayish-white mud, making it look quite sturdy. The roof leaned against the mountainside, constructed from wooden beams and then large, thin stones. Linni stepped into the stone house, but felt a wave of heat hit her, and she retreated a few steps.
