Chapter 3839 The Nameless Bat (Part 9)
The next morning, Natasha had just gotten out of bed when she heard her cell phone ringing like a madman. She answered weakly, "Who is it?"
"Looks like I gave you too much time," Arkham Batman's voice came through the phone. "Was last night a passionate night?"
"A passionate night? With whom? Morphine?" Natasha was so angry she laughed.
"It seems our agent has a penchant for morphine. But I still have to ask, aren't you a cyborg?"
“I guess that stuff could poison an elephant,” Natasha said weakly, sprawled on the bed. “And I didn’t expect it to be hypnotic.”
“That’s some news,” said Arkham Batman. “But it’s probably the practical kind, isn’t it?”
"That's so useful. He just wants to know what you told me."
"Did you tell him?"
“I don’t remember very well,” Natasha began to deflect, saying, “If anything happens, don’t blame me.”
"You're the one who wanted him to come."
"You agreed to it."
“Okay,” Natasha continued. “It wasn’t anything important anyway, so he just knows. It’s just that he’s a bit too focused on his job. Of all of us, including you, he’s the only one who’s really serious about his work.”
“Then let him work. I’ll leave the FBI directorship to him,” Arkham Batman said. “Did you go see Wonder Woman?”
"Not yet, I'll go now." Natasha hung up the phone and sat up resignedly. Within a few breaths, the dizziness disappeared.
However, when she arrived at the office, the overwhelming cheers and whistles gave her a headache again.
“You, shut up,” Natasha said, pointing at the one who was shouting the loudest.
"I saw it!" another person suddenly stood up and said, "The boss is drunk, and that guy from next door helped him into the car!"
"You shut up too." Natasha shot her a glare.
She really didn't have time to argue with them, so she asked, "How are the people in interrogation room number 1 doing?"
“I don’t know. Agent Rodriguez went in early this morning and hasn’t come out yet,” one of the agents said, shaking his head.
Natasha sighed. Schiller had definitely used the dirt he'd found out yesterday to blackmail Wonder Woman. But if she went now, she'd likely run into a Wonder Woman in a bad mood. It was better to wait until Wonder Woman calmed down before going over to play the good guy.
To her surprise, when she returned to the coffee shop, Schiller was already there fiddling with the coffee machine. Natasha walked over, looked at him, and said, "Aren't you going to give me an explanation?"
“I told you,” Schiller said, turning to look Natasha in the eyes, “I never intended to get you drunk.”
Natasha punched the wall. Facing Schiller, she felt powerless. Who was Schiller trying to use his powers on her just to extract information?
To avoid getting so angry she could die, she turned and went next door, where she saw Moon Knight sitting in a chair playing on his phone. He was so kind that Natasha almost couldn't resist giving him a hug.
She walked over and sat down next to Moon Knight, saying, "What are you doing?"
“I’m a pay thief,” Schiller said. “Every second I slack off here, I earn a point for free. So far, it seems to be going smoothly.”
“You…” Natasha hesitated for a moment before saying, “I mean the other you, the one called Agent, what’s wrong with him?”
"What? Oh, you mean the detective? He's one of the few normal people around here."
"A normal person?!"
Schiller took off his hood, looked at Natasha, and said, "Do you think I'm normal?"
“Uh…” Natasha couldn’t honestly give a definite answer, so she shook her head.
"If I'm abnormal, then isn't he normal?"
Natasha was speechless. She thought about it, and it seemed to be true. Because all the Schillers she had encountered before were too abstract, the agent's overly concrete existence seemed very abnormal.
From the moment Natasha met him, every word the agent uttered was business, every sentence was followed up, and every matter was implemented. Although his methods of extracting information from her were somewhat drastic, the fact that she wasn't in a state of some kind of human artwork after waking up fully demonstrates just how normal the agent was.
Natasha suddenly realized. It turned out that not all Schillers were so eccentric; the one she had encountered was a rare breed.
"Did you try to persuade Wonder Woman?" Schiller asked Natasha. "Unfortunately, my identity prevents me from providing her with psychological treatment. Until Batman has new plans, I'll just have to slack off here."
He had just finished speaking when the phone rang. After saying a few words to the other end, Schiller stood up and said, "Time to slack off is over. I have to go."
"Where are you going?"
Amazon.
Standing before interrogation room number one, Natasha felt a vague unease. But after a long pause, she pushed the door open and went inside. Wonder Woman looked far more haggard than yesterday; it seemed Schiller's threats had been quite effective.
“Good morning, ma’am,” Natasha said. “You don’t look well. Should we call the doctor?”
“No need,” Wonder Woman shook her head and said. “Has Batman done something again?”
Natasha shook her head reluctantly, then said, "Don't worry too much. If he really wanted to hurt you, he wouldn't have locked you up here. To me, this is more like a form of protection."
“You don’t understand,” Wonder Woman said. “No matter what I face, no matter who I am, I will always choose to know the truth and face it together with them, rather than to know nothing and be protected by others. It has nothing to do with the other person’s motives; I believe it is a basic form of respect.”
“I agree with that,” Natasha said. “It makes me much happier to be told the truth clearly and let you make your own choice than to lock you up without telling you anything under the guise of ‘for your own good’.”
Unfortunately, Batman doesn't think so.
Natasha pursed her lips and said, "Is it possible that he actually told you and gave you the opportunity to choose, but you just didn't choose the one he wanted?"
Wonder Woman suddenly looked up at her.
“I suspect you’re not entirely oblivious,” Natasha said, looking down. “Batman wouldn’t attack the Amazon for no reason. The only reason he’s targeting a small country with whom he has no stake is because of you.”
"What does he want me to do? Abandon my country?!" Wonder Woman said angrily. "How could I do that?!"
Amazon or Paradise Island?
"what?"
Which is your country? The Amazon or Paradise Island?
“They are one,” Wonder Woman said. “Themyscira leads the Amazon. I am the Amazon princess, so naturally I should stand on the Amazon’s side. I cannot abandon my country for our personal friendship.”
"So this is your choice."
"You mean Batman wants me to abandon my country? But why? The Amazon doesn't pose a threat to him, and neither does Paradise Island..."
Wonder Woman suddenly stopped. Natasha saw her fingers begin to tremble and her muscles tense. Sensing danger, Natasha quickly backed away.
Fortunately, the other party didn't seem to want to hurt her. He tried his best to control the burst of divine power and then looked at her with an incredulous gaze, saying, "Is Batman... No, I have to go ask him."
Wonder Woman tried to fly towards the door, but was blocked by a silver barrier. She pounded on the barrier with all her might, even using her superhuman strength, but she couldn't open it. Somewhat anxiously, she said to Natasha, "Have that weirdo open this thing! I have to go back to Paradise Island!"
"Calm down, ma'am. You should understand that Batman brought you here because he doesn't want you to go back."
“No, he can’t! He…” Wonder Woman clenched her fists and said, “This shouldn’t be. He shouldn’t have attacked my sisters. He knew they had superpowers all along, why did he only do it now…”
Wonder Woman suddenly froze, then muttered to herself, "No, his target isn't Paradise Island, it's Mount Olympus!!!"
She slammed her fist against the wall, leaving a ripple on the silver screen. Gritting her teeth, she said, "He knows my mother has the key to Mount Olympus. What is he trying to do?!"
Hearing what she said, Natasha finally realized who she was referring to. She exclaimed, "Wait a minute, your mother's name isn't Hippolyta, is it?!"
"That's right, she is the queen of Paradise Island."
"So your dad is Zeus?" Natasha gave a complicated look, a hint of pity in her eyes as she looked at Wonder Woman. "If Batman's target is Zeus, I don't think you need to get so worked up. Don't tell me you think Zeus has fatherly love..."
“Of course not.” Wonder Woman said, pursing her lips. “I don’t like the King and Queen of Gods, and I don’t like Mount Olympus. It’s never been my home. But Batman can’t… that’s too dangerous!”
After Natasha learned about Wonder Woman's past, she could roughly understand Batman. Wonder Woman had no feelings for the Olympus family, but if she knew that Batman planned to venture into Olympus alone, she would absolutely not agree.
Those are real gods. She has no feelings for Mount Olympus, but she has feelings for Batman. She will absolutely not allow Batman to put himself in danger and will do everything in her power to stop him.
However, to outsiders, it could easily be interpreted as Batman wanting to cause trouble for her paternal family, and Wonder Woman stopping him. Regardless of the interpretation, it seems Batman is just stirring up trouble. Many people will likely sympathize with Wonder Woman.
To avoid the aforementioned conflicts, Batman simply arrested everyone. This way, Wonder Woman wouldn't stop him, and others wouldn't take sides and cause him trouble.
The action was swift and decisive, but the problem was that it was a bit too swift. This guy was your teammate, and you went and raided his base? Was that really a good idea?
“Anyway, that whole family wasn’t exactly a good person,” Natasha tried her best to comfort Wonder Woman. “They didn’t play any important role in Earth. So what if they’re gone? Paradise Island is still here, isn’t it?”
Wonder Woman seemed completely oblivious to what she was saying; the anxiety and worry on her face were genuine. This made Natasha realize a problem—the Justice League members in their universe seemed unaware of just how powerful their Batman was.
It seems Wonder Woman is worried that the gods will harm Batman.
Just as Natasha was thinking this, Wonder Woman grabbed her shoulder. She said, "Go to my apartment, find a letter in the second drawer of the TV cabinet that's been enchanted by the Messenger God. Write Ares's name on it and tell him not to hurt Batman. It's all a misunderstanding, I'll be back soon. Hurry!!"
Natasha opened her mouth, but finally nodded.
Sorry for being a little late.
