Chapter 3926 MU Superbody Major Event (6)
Chapter 3926 MU: The Superbody Incident (Part Six)
Superman from the main universe hurriedly returned to his own universe, but couldn't find Batman in the Hall of Justice. He wasn't at the outpost, nor in the Batcave. Finally, he spotted Batman at the docks. Batman had just dealt with a thug who had stolen relief supplies.
In the main universe, Batman knocked the villain down with one punch, then punched him twice more in the face, twisted his arms behind his back, handcuffed him, and put him in a police car.
The Superman from the main universe flew over and landed slowly beside him. The Batman from the main universe turned to look at him, wiped the rain off his face, and remained silent.
“I didn’t mean to use you,” he suddenly said. “I just thought you should know this.”
“I should have known. You seem much calmer now,” the Superman from the main universe said, looking at him. “I thought you would be avoiding me.”
"I don't need to do that."
“You always do this. You told me this just to get rid of me. You thought I'd stay there for a long time so you could have some time to think for yourself. Were you disappointed when I came back?”
These words should have been somewhat offensive, but the Batman of the main universe couldn't detect a trace of accusation in them. Superman is always adept at making accusatory statements sound like genuine concern and greetings. This particular person, however, was the exact opposite.
"Why are you here at this hour?" The slender figure standing by the window turned around, watching the main universe's Batman shaking the rainwater off his cape at the door. "How's the post-disaster recovery going? It hasn't gotten chaotic, has it?"
"Fortunately, a few people tried to cause trouble. The cybernetic lifecycles lost power a few more times, but it wasn't anything critical. The Joker stopped a Penguin's subordinate from betraying him and saving his life. The upper echelons haven't descended into chaos yet. How are you, Doctor?"
“Not bad. Nimosini is asleep, and I’m checking next week’s appointment.” Schiller walked over and sat down on the sofa, saying without looking up, “You’re here so late, you must have run into some trouble.”
"Doctor, let's skip your pretense of not being able to read minds and get straight to your opinion."
Schiller sighed softly, closed the phone book, glanced at the eyes of the main universe's Batman, shook his head, and said, "I really can't handle this. Wait for the next person to come to you."
"why?"
“Don’t ask questions you already know the answer to,” Schiller said, looking at him. “No matter how much you deny that you are Bruce Wayne, you are him. You own the property associated with his social status, so you are a big capitalist. Any righteous person who cares about the poor is a Damocles’ sword hanging over your head, including Superman.”
"No matter how much money you spend on your Batman suit, or how much you help the poor and fight crime, it won't help you escape trial. Your money gives you choices, while the poor have no choices. When they have choices, you have none. That's a basic law of society."
“If you were a fool, I could come up with a set of hypocritical social rules to comfort you. But you’re too smart, and I can’t come up with a lie that can completely fool you. So this kind of treatment is pointless.”
"The skill of a good psychologist lies not in telling you what you can escape, but in telling you what you must bear without breaking you down. These are clearly the costs you must bear."
Aren't you worried I'll break down?
“You won’t. These are things you’ve already thought through, but Judgment Day only existed in your imagination before, and today you’ve seen it as reality. And you’re not sad about your fate, you just don’t want the judge to be Superman.”
“He can’t do that,” the main universe Batman said. “I can’t force him to do it, even if I did it voluntarily.”
"You always underestimate him. I'm not saying he can do something like that, but you seem completely unable to imagine him rejecting you for a perfectly legitimate reason. Can you?"
The main universe's Batman opened his mouth and said, "But he didn't refuse him either."
"I don't actually have mind-reading abilities, but at least tell me who these two people are."
"The League of Injustice".
Schiller paused for a moment before continuing, "You're imagining that on the day you're on trial, you'll hand over everything, even such a terrible ending, and you'll be willing to accept it. Then you convince Superman not to stop it all. But have you considered what if he actually convinces you?"
How did he convince me?
"Yes, you think all of this is just. If that day ever comes, you probably won't resist. You'd be willing to be locked up as a supercomputer, as long as it brings happiness to the vast majority of people in the world. But Superman might think it's all wrong. Once he's convinced of that, he'll definitely be able to convince you."
The main universe's Batman clearly didn't believe it, saying, "But that's right. What's wrong with it? If someone can bring a fairer way of distribution to the world and has the ability to ensure it's implemented, then he can indeed bring happiness to the vast majority of humanity on Earth. Isn't that Superman's ultimate goal?"
"Theoretically, yes. But is Superman a profit-driven person?"
“Even if he isn’t, he can’t say it’s wrong. So he can’t convince me.”
Schiller smiled but didn't speak. The main universe's Batman, unusually tense, said, "You have that much faith in him?"
“Go ahead,” Schiller said, pointing to the door. “I told you, psychotherapy won’t work on this problem. You’d be better off spending that time at the docks carrying a couple more sandbags.”
The main universe's Batman, walking alongside Superman, snapped out of his daze. He shook his head and said, "I'm glad you're back. There's nothing to be disappointed about."
You look like you have something to say.
The main universe's Batman stopped in his tracks, hesitated for a moment, and then said, "If I became like that one day, what would you do?"
"Of course, I'll save you."
"What if I deserve it?"
"How could you deserve this?"
"Don't you think Bruce Wayne deserved it?"
The Superman from the main universe shook his head.
"So what role should Wayne Enterprises play in a fair society? Continue to be aloof and superior?"
"Of course not. If we followed his tax collection methods, Wayne Corporation would go bankrupt very quickly. You might end up penniless."
“I mean,” the Batman of the main universe said, looking into the eyes of the Superman of the main universe, “don’t you think Bruce Wayne should pay the price for the injustices of the past?”
“Who knows?” Superman sighed. “I know I can’t say things like ‘This isn’t all your fault,’ nor can I say ‘Social responsibility shouldn’t be placed on you alone,’ because many times you do have a choice. You enjoy more wealth, so naturally you bear more responsibility. What you alone have done for the poor will never compare to what Wayne Enterprises has gained from the poor. It’s an unforgivable sin. Therefore, you feel that if there really is a Judgment Day, whatever punishment you receive will be deserved—for not saving more people, for not saving everyone.”
“But you’ve got one thing wrong. If there really is a Day of Judgment, it won’t be any one person judging you. If that person were me, I would give up; if it were someone else, I would stop them. Because that’s not fair.”
"why?"
“Even if I bring happiness to everyone, I cannot claim that I can represent the will of the people with my will. If someone thinks he has done the right thing and then gives himself unlimited power to represent others, he is not a hero, but a thug.”
"Your voluntary sacrifice is the same. If you think it's right and therefore give yourself the power to represent the will of others, believing that everyone wants to see you end up like that, then that's arrogant and wrong. Of course, I have to stop you."
Why wouldn't they want to see me end up like this?
“Because it’s not normal, it’s cruel.” The Superman from the main universe looked at him like he was an idiot. “You might go bankrupt and become penniless, or even be heavily in debt or go to jail, but to become a brain that’s been soaking in a jar? Please, that’s inhuman!”
"Batman, your arrogance lies in your apparent unwillingness to believe that the majority of people in this world are normal. Do you think that when Judgment Day comes, a global referendum will force everyone to throw you into a formaldehyde jar? Just because you used to be rich?"
"...Won't you?"
"Haha." Superman from the main universe seemed to have heard some absurd joke. He said, "If I gave you two options: one is to put Bruce Wayne in a jar of formalin, and the other is to have Bruce Wayne fly to their house immediately and give them a kiss, do you believe that 90% of the world's population would choose the latter?"
"why?"
"Because you're good-looking. They'd rather have a kiss from a handsome guy than from a human specimen that has nothing to do with them."
"But my brain..."
"Not everyone has a brain. Most people in this world would usually choose their lower body over their brain because they love themselves more, know how to indulge themselves more, and are more selfish than you."
"That's why they are kinder than you think, because they are more emotional and more willing to think about whether it's too cruel to put someone in formaldehyde, and whether the people who pushed this forward will one day do the same to them."
"Why do you think that Superman from Injustice doesn't dare to announce to the world that he's mind-controlled Batman? Because he knows most people won't agree and will call him a psychopath. It's not that he can't, it's that he doesn't dare."
"So, you can choose to let Wayne Enterprises go bankrupt, or give up and let the tax laws redistribute your wealth, but not voluntarily hand over your brain to become a public computer. And my stopping this inhumane thing isn't because I'm unwilling to fight for a fair society, but because it's abnormal. Okay?"
The main universe's Batman suddenly realized that Schiller was right again. Because Superman had indeed convinced him.
“You have a superpower,” the main universe Batman said, “the superpower to stay normal at all times.”
“This isn’t a superpower.” The Superman from the main universe looked quite helpless. He said, “I can stay normal at any time because I’m a normal person. It’s not something that requires effort.”
"That's superpowers."
"this is not!"
"Yes."
"why?"
"Because I'm Batman."
