Chapter 1232: Now, I Have No Mother Either
Feng Fuce noticed it was still early. He said to Bai Zhi’er, "You should sleep a bit more. Are you still going to Yan Country?"
Bai Zhi’er thought for a moment, "It’s almost dawn, I won’t go for now. I’ll check it out tomorrow night."
Feng Fuce nodded. He thought for a while before saying, "I won’t go far, just outside the window."
With that, he turned and left the window, but didn’t go far.
Bai Zhi’er lay down again, pulling the quilt tightly over herself.
Feng Fuce surely knew that she was still frightened by the rats and couldn’t sleep immediately.
So he told her he would be outside keeping watch, to reassure her.
He always had a way of making Bai Zhi’er feel his kindness through subtle gestures.
Perhaps because she knew Feng Fuce was outside the window, Bai Zhi’er gradually felt at ease.
She turned over, and amidst her chaotic thoughts, drifted back to sleep.
This time, her Divine Sense was beyond her control and led her to the backyard of the Yuan Residence.
As dawn was breaking, Bai Zhi’er stood at the entrance of a courtyard.
She heard Yuan Ruxin’s voice from inside—
"Xixi, from now on, you will be my sister. When my father and brother return, they will officially add your name to the family registry. We are family now."
Xixi’s weak voice came through, "Then... what about my mother? Can you bring her here, sister?"
Afraid that Yuan Ruxin might find it troublesome, Xixi hurriedly added, "My mother’s illness doesn’t require much for medicine. I can use my monthly salary to buy her medicine."
Yuan Ruxin was silent for a moment.
After a while, she said, "Xixi, your mother isn’t well enough to leave home casually."
"You know, traveling a long way, the bumping back and forth, won’t help her recover."
"So I’ve already arranged for some servants and the doctor to go take care of her."
"Once she’s recovered, we’ll bring her here to live together."
Xixi paused in her tone, "Really?"
Yuan Ruxin nodded, "Yes, indeed, your mother agreed, and she even asked me to take good care of you as you grow up."
After a long while, Xixi finally said, "I understand, sister."
"It’s still early. You should sleep first. When my master returns from the palace, I’ll come with her to visit you." Yuan Ruxin said, then left.
For some reason, she didn’t see Bai Zhi’er.
Bai Zhi’er was about to step forward but heard suppressed sobbing from inside the room.
She was taken aback.
Bai Zhi’er pushed the door open and went inside.
She saw Xixi curled up on the bed, her frail body trembling slightly.
Bai Zhi’er couldn’t help but ask, "Xixi, what’s wrong?"
Hearing Bai Zhi’er’s voice, Xixi looked up suddenly.
"Sister..." She wiped away her tears, "It’s nothing."
Bai Zhi’er knew she was thoughtful and cautious.
So she approached willingly, "What’s wrong? Didn’t Ruxin just say that when your mother gets better, she will bring her here? Why are you crying?"
Although Bai Zhi’er knew that Yuan Ruxin’s words were surely meant to comfort her, she thought Xixi didn’t know.
But unexpectedly, Xixi looked at her with tearful eyes:
"Sister lied to me, my mother surely won’t make it because when I left, she could no longer speak."
"How could she ask sister such things? Besides, my mother’s character is timid, she’d never say let sister take care of me growing up. She’d only tell me to be obedient."
With that, Xixi started crying, wiping her tears endlessly, "My father is gone, and now, I have no mother either."
