Chapter 95 Mysterious Identity
Chapter 95 Mysterious Identity
The thirteen or fourteen-year-old boy turned to run, but Li Wei raised his hand and fired a shot, hitting him in the calf. He fell to the ground and cried out in pain.
The last member ran towards the bank entrance, with Li Wei in hot pursuit.
The other party had just run to the door when he was stopped by several police officers who rushed in from outside.
Li Wei breathed a sigh of relief, stopped, and turned to look in the direction of the safe.
He walked over, gently pulled open the cabinet door, and found the little girl curled up inside.
She stared at him with wide eyes, tears still streaming down her face.
Li Wei extended his hand, his voice softening: "Come out, you're safe now."
The little girl hesitated for a moment, then slowly reached out her small hand and grasped his fingers.
Her hands were cold and trembling slightly.
Li Wei carried her out and found that her eyes were fixed on her mother's corpse not far away, and tears began to fall again.
The sirens outside grew closer, and Marcus arrived with several Wayne Enterprises employees.
Upon seeing the scene inside the bank, Marcus turned pale and immediately ordered an ambulance and forensic examination.
Li Wei carried the little girl to her mother's body.
The little girl broke free from his embrace, threw herself into her mother's arms, and cried out again, her voice filled with despair.
Li Wei stood to the side, watching this scene, his fingers clenched into fists.
Sunlight streamed through the shattered glass curtain wall, falling on the mother and daughter, but it couldn't dispel the stench of blood in the air.
His gaze swept over the corpses and scattered cash on the ground.
The smiling faces of the children in the warehouse and Bruce's casual words in the bar came to mind again.
The sunshine in Gotham is always fleeting, while darkness and chaos follow it like a shadow, and innocent lives are often the first victims to be devoured.
Police officers quickly brought the scene under control, and Gordon, with bandages wrapped around his neck, got out of the police car.
Upon seeing Levi, Gordon's face flashed with surprise, and he quickly walked over: "Hey buddy, what's going on?"
"I happened to be nearby taking care of some business when I heard there was a gunfight over here."
Li Wei spoke in a low voice, his gaze fixed on the little girl, and briefly recounted what had just happened.
Gordon is not an outsider, so there's no need to hide anything about these things.
Gordon followed his gaze and saw the corpse on the ground and the crying little girl; his expression grew even more grave.
He sighed and patted Li Wei on the shoulder.
"Leave this to us. Let the social workers handle the child and contact her family...if she still has any family."
Li Wei shook his head and said to Gordon, "I'll take her to 'Hope House' first."
After contacting her family, have them go there to pick her up.
He turned and walked out of the bank. The sunlight was dazzling, but it couldn't penetrate the gloom in his heart.
The little girl in his arms was still crying, her cries intermittent, like a fine needle repeatedly pricking his nerves.
He walked heavily toward the pickup truck.
The pickup truck's engine stopped roaring in front of "Hope House," and Levi, holding the little girl in his arms, opened the car door.
The apartment building's brand-new exterior gleamed softly in the sunlight. The security guard at the entrance saw him and immediately stepped forward to open the door.
"Mr. Li Wei".
The security guard spoke respectfully, his gaze fixed on the child in his arms, whose tears were still wet.
Although a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, he did not ask any further questions.
Li Wei nodded and strode into the hall.
The warm air, carrying a faint smell of disinfectant, wafted over, creating a stark contrast with the stench of blood inside the bank.
Marcus was standing at the front desk explaining things to the staff when he saw Marcus come in, and immediately came to greet him.
"Mr. Li Wei, the children have all been settled in, their rooms have been assigned, and lunch is being prepared."
Marcus's gaze fell on the little girl. "And who is this?"
"Her name is Anna."
Li Wei's voice was low and somber. "We'll keep her here for now. The police will contact her family later."
Marcus nodded immediately: "I'll have a private room prepared and find a female staff member to take care of her."
He turned and gave a few instructions to the receptionist. Soon, a young female staff member in a pink uniform came over with a gentle smile on her face.
"Anna, come with me, I'll show you your room." The female staff member's voice was very gentle.
Anna gripped Levi's clothes tightly, her body trembling slightly, her eyes filled with vigilance.
Li Wei crouched down and gently patted her back, his fingertips touching her cold nape.
"Wait here, I'll be back when I'm done."
Anna's lips moved, but she didn't speak; instead, she tightened her grip on his clothes.
The female staff member handed over a plush bear and said softly, "Let's go check out the little bed in the room, and there are lots of fun toys too."
Anna hesitated for a few seconds, then slowly loosened the hem of Li Wei's clothes.
He took the teddy bear, hugged it to his chest, and followed the female staff member toward the elevator.
As she reached the elevator, she glanced back at Li Wei, her eyes still filled with tears.
Li Wei stood there, watching the elevator doors close, before turning to look at Marcus.
"Please take good care of her and call me immediately if anything happens."
He took out his phone and exchanged numbers with Marcus.
"Don't worry, Mr. Li Wei."
Marcus handed him a room key. "This is your room, right next to Anna's. Call me anytime if you need anything."
Li Wei took the room key, didn't linger, turned around and quickly walked out of the apartment building.
The pickup truck was still parked at the door. He opened the door, got in, started the engine, and drove towards the Gotham Police Department.
The police station's interrogation room was filled with the strong smell of tobacco and sweat.
Li Wei pushed open the door and saw Gordon sitting behind the table with a furrowed brow.
He had a cigarette between his fingers, and a long ash had accumulated on it.
Behind the one-way glass of the interrogation room, two handcuffed members of the Red Hood group sat in chairs.
They had their heads down, and Li Wei couldn't see the expressions on their faces from his angle.
"Hey buddy, you're here."
Gordon looked up and stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray.
"These two are alive. One is the thirteen or fourteen-year-old boy, and the other is the guy who tried to run away last."
Li Wei walked to the glass and his gaze fell on the boy.
His calf was wrapped in thick gauze, and blood had seeped through.
His hands were handcuffed to the table, his body swayed slightly, but he remained silent.
The other man was tall and thin, with a hideous scar on his face.
He kept his head down, his hair covering most of his face, and remained motionless, like a statue.
"How long has the trial been going on?" Li Wei asked.
Two hours.
Gordon rubbed his temples.
"We can't get anything out of them, whether we beat them, scold them, or offer them a reduced sentence, they're like mutes."
He pointed to the notebook on the table. "It's completely blank."
Li Wei pushed open the door to the interrogation room and walked in; his footsteps were particularly clear in the empty room.
The two prisoners did not look up and remained in their original positions.
The boy's shoulders tensed slightly, and his fingers unconsciously dug at the edge of the table, leaving a few shallow marks.
Who are you?
Li Wei's voice was calm, without the slightest ripple.
No one responded.
Why rob a bank?
He walked up to the boy and bent down to look at him.
The boy's ears twitched, but he kept his head down, his long bangs covering his eyes.
The tall, thin man next to him suddenly sneered, looked up, and his eyes were full of mockery.
A strange smile appeared on his lips, but he didn't speak.
Li Wei's gaze fell on his hands, where black grime remained under his fingernails.
There was a thick layer of calluses on the tiger's mouth, which looked like the result of holding tools for many years.
He then looked at the boy, whose fingers were slender and whose skin was fair, unlike someone who often did rough work.
"Who is your leader?"
Li Wei continued to ask, raising his voice slightly.
The boy's body trembled, and his hands clenched into fists, clearly indicating that he was not at peace.
The tall, thin man leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes, and looked indifferent.
Levi turned and walked out of the interrogation room, saying to Gordon, "Let me try again."
Gordon nodded and handed him a folder.
"Here are their preliminary identification information and the on-site investigation report. Please take a look."
Li Wei opened the folder; the first page contained the boy's information.
His name is Toby, he is 15 years old, and he is a student at Gotham City Third High School.
He has average grades, his parents are divorced, he lives with his maternal grandmother, and he has no prior criminal record.
The second page contains information about a tall, thin man named Gray, 38 years old, a homeless man.
He had previously been sentenced to six months in prison for theft and had been unemployed since his release.
He continued flipping through the pages, where the on-site investigation report detailed the findings of the on-site inspection.
The bank suffered a cash loss of approximately $100,000, far less than the actual deposits in the safe.
Seven bodies were found at the scene; all were bank employees and innocent passersby.
All fatal wounds were gunshot wounds; the shooting was precise and the perpetrators were ruthless.
The bank's surveillance footage was destroyed, leaving only a few images from a few scattered cameras.
"What about the identities of the other deceased?" Li Wei asked.
"We're verifying it," Gordon said. "Initially, we've identified one as a butcher, another as an insurance company employee, and we're still verifying the identities of the rest."
"They have no connection whatsoever?" Li Wei frowned.
"No." Gordon shook his head.
"Toby is a high school student, Gray is a homeless man, and the butcher usually works at a slaughterhouse in the suburbs."
The insurance company employee lived in an upscale downtown neighborhood; they had no prior contact and weren't even in the same social circle.
Li Wei tapped his fingers lightly on the report, his gaze falling on the line "cash loss of one hundred thousand US dollars".
With their firepower and methods, they could easily steal even more money.
They only took this little bit, and the extent of the damage at the scene far exceeded what was needed for the robbery.
He recalled the discussions among those players, and how they would stop at nothing to gain reputation.
Could these people also be players?
"I'll try again." Li Wei walked into the interrogation room again, holding a glass of water, and placed it in front of Toby.
Toby's throat moved, and he raised his head, revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
He glanced at the water glass, then quickly looked down again.
"Your grandmother is still waiting for you to come home," Li Wei said softly.
Toby's body jolted violently, his hands gripping the edge of the table tightly, his knuckles turning white from the force.
Tears suddenly welled up in his eyes, slid down his cheeks, and dripped onto the table.
"She didn't know you were here; she thought you were just skipping class to play."
Li Wei continued, "If you cooperate now, I can help you contact her and have her come to see you."
Toby's shoulders trembled violently, and his sobs were muffled in his throat, making a low, whimpering sound.
He looked up at Li Wei, his lips trembling, but he still didn't say anything.
Gray, who was standing next to Toby, suddenly opened his eyes and glared at him fiercely: "Shut up!"
Toby's crying stopped abruptly. He shrank back, lowered his head again, and refused to lift it up.
Levi looked at Gray, his eyes filled with warning, even a hint of murderous intent.
It was clear that Gray was threatening Toby.
Li Wei didn't ask any further questions and turned to leave the interrogation room.
Gordon came up to him and asked, "How was it?"
"There was a reaction, but I was scared by another one." Levi shook his head. "That guy named Gray is probably the leader among them."
"I've already applied for a lie detector and a psychologist to see if we can make a breakthrough."
Gordon sighed. "But I don't have much hope. These two seem determined to hold out to the very end."
Li Wei walked to the window and looked at the bustling streets outside.
The sun was shining brightly, and pedestrians hurried along the street, each with their own expression.
No one knows the horrific massacre that occurred in the bank just hours earlier.
The images of those players flashed through his mind. If these guys treated this world as a game, they'd probably do anything.
As a seasoned gamer, Li Wei knew perfectly well that players would go to any lengths to advance in the game.
Are these Red Hood members also gaining prestige through killing?
The chaos and fear in Gotham City may just be a game to them.
"Did you find anything unusual at the scene?" Li Wei asked, turning around.
"Apart from firearms and ammunition, there's nothing else special."
Gordon said, "The guns are all on the black market, and it's very difficult to trace their origin."
Li Wei nodded without saying anything.
He knew that if, as he suspected, these guys were all players like him, he probably wouldn't find any useful clues at all.
Although these guys came from the same world as him, their identities were randomly assigned, with no discernible pattern.
"By the way, how's that little girl?" Gordon asked.
"They've been settled in at 'Hope Home'."
Li Wei asked, "Have you heard anything from the police? Have they found her family?"
"Still under investigation."
Gordon shook his head. "Her mother's identity has been verified. Her name is Sarah, and she's an accountant at a company."
Her husband died young, and she only had one daughter, Anna.
We have contacted her relatives, but there has been no response yet.
Li Wei fell silent.
He could imagine how Anna must feel right now. Having lost her mother and being in an unfamiliar environment, she must be terrified.
A sudden commotion broke out in the interrogation room.
Levi and Gordon rushed over and saw Toby struggling desperately to break free of his handcuffs, making incoherent shouts.
Gray sat in his chair, looking at him coldly, his eyes devoid of any emotion.
"Hold him down!"
Gordon shouted, and several police officers rushed in and pinned Toby down.
Toby struggled violently, his face flushed red, tears and sweat mingling and sliding down his cheeks.
"Don't touch me! Let go of me!"
Toby screamed, his voice hoarse, "I want to get out! I want to get out!"
