Chapter 138 I'm Not Your Wife
Chapter 138 I'm Not Your Wife
"Huh!?" I lowered my head in embarrassment.
I never imagined he had such a hard life before.
After he sat down, I couldn't contain my surprise and asked, "Why didn't you tell me you were working here to earn money?"
Jiang Yichen smiled slightly, a complex emotion barely perceptible in his eyes: "Have you ever cared about me before?"
His question left me speechless for a moment. Indeed, during our marriage, I never really cared about his life, his work, or his joys and sorrows.
I remained silent for a moment, my heart filled with mixed emotions.
Just then, the proprietress finished her work and came over with a big smile to greet him: "Yichen, it's been a long time! This must be the wife you've been talking about all this time? You finally brought her here today!"
I was startled and subconsciously thought they were talking about Lin Nan. I hurriedly tried to explain that I wasn't Jiang Yichen's wife.
After all, I'm already divorced from him.
However, Jiang Yichen spoke first, saying in his steady and powerful voice, "Yes, ma'am, this is my wife. I brought her here today to try your cooking."
His tone was so firm and unwavering that I was momentarily speechless.
I glanced at him helplessly, thinking to myself: When did this man become so domineering?
Upon hearing this, the proprietress smiled even more brightly: "Great! I've been wanting to try this today! Come, come, have a seat, the food will be here shortly!"
With that, the proprietress turned and went back to work.
I glared at Jiang Yichen and muttered in a low voice, "Why are you talking nonsense? I'm not your wife!"
Jiang Yichen just smiled slightly, as if he didn't care about my complaint at all: "Not now, but maybe later."
His words carried a hint of playfulness and provocation, leaving me speechless for a moment.
The boss took advantage of the quieter atmosphere to chat with Jiang Yichen, but he mostly talked to me.
“This was the first time this kid came to work for me. I saw that he was thin and I was hesitant to hire him, but he insisted. I thought that his family was poor and he was working to support himself, so I took him on.”
As the owner was speaking, he opened a bottle of beer, but I quickly stopped him, saying, "Uncle Li, his stomach isn't feeling well today, so he can't drink. And don't put chili on the skewers either."
I was so surprised that I almost forgot about it, and I felt a little regretful.
Unexpectedly, Uncle Li's gaze lingered between the two of us, and he chuckled, "Yichen, you always say your wife doesn't care about you, but I think she cares too much!"
Then he looked at me, smiled and said, "Don't worry, girl, this is what I drank, I won't give it to him."
After he said that, I was even more afraid to speak, and I almost buried my head in the ground.
"Old man, why aren't you getting to work? You're slacking off again. Come and get the skewers."
Just as the boss was about to speak, his wife roared, and he said with a smile, "Coming! My tigress has gone berserk again. I'll go over first, we'll talk later."
I nodded slightly.
The owner left in a hurry and soon brought over a plate of skewers. Jiang Yichen skillfully arranged the cutlery, and while picking up food for me, he asked me with concern, "Do you like the taste here?"
I wasn't really used to it, but the taste wasn't bad either. And thinking that Jiang Yichen might overthink it, I told him, "I can eat it."
The atmosphere was originally quite harmonious.
Jiang Yichen suddenly changed the subject and said to himself, "That's right, I'm not a rich young lady anymore, so what's there to be unaccustomed to?"
These words were like a bucket of cold water, instantly extinguishing the warmth in my heart.
I was stunned, staring at Jiang Yichen's familiar yet unfamiliar face, feeling a mix of emotions.
I realized that my earlier feeling of being moved was perhaps just a misunderstanding born of wishful thinking.
Jiang Yichen's words, though seemingly unintentional, deeply wounded my pride.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down.
I looked at Jiang Yichen, a hint of disappointment and helplessness flashing in my eyes: "Jiang Yichen, do you find it funny to talk like this? Do you feel particularly satisfied watching me make a fool of myself?"
I'd eaten enough, and seeing that his stomach seemed fine, I put down my chopsticks and headed outside.
Jiang Yichen caught up from behind, grabbed my wrist, and asked in a deep voice, "What are you doing now?"
I shook off his hand and asked in disappointment, "Do you think I'm just making a scene no matter what I do?"
"Jiang Yichen, I have already paid the price for my past actions. Isn't that enough? Why do you have to remind me and humiliate me again and again?"
A hint of panic flashed across Jiang Yichen's face, but unfortunately I had no interest in probing his thoughts.
After a long silence, Jiang Yichen finally said, "I'll take you back."
After hearing his words, a mocking smile crept across my lips. What was I expecting? Was I expecting him to apologize to me?
I'm really crazy.
Finally, at Jiang Yichen's insistence, he sent me back.
Night had fallen, and the streetlights cast a dim yellow glow. I watched our shadows stretch long under the streetlights, yet it seemed as if there was an insurmountable distance between us.
When I got to my building, I was about to turn around and go upstairs.
Jiang Yichen suddenly spoke, his voice filled with unwavering resolve: "Starting tomorrow, don't go shoot that commercial anymore. I'll replace you."
what?
Upon hearing this, I paused in my steps and turned back to look at Jiang Yichen in surprise.
I don't understand why Jiang Yichen would suddenly make such a decision.
I tried to persuade them: "Why? I really want to shoot this commercial."
He didn't answer, but I guessed it.
My brow furrowed, a hint of doubt flashing in my eyes, and I asked, "Is it because of Zhao Ning?"
I was speechless; I hadn't expected Jiang Yichen's thoughts to jump to this direction.
But I patiently explained, "No, Jiang Yichen, don't overthink it. I just feel that I can't be a live streamer forever; I need to think of other ways out. Shooting commercials is a good idea for me."
My words were full of sincerity and determination. I thought Jiang Yichen would understand my thoughts, or at least consider my suggestion.
However, Jiang Yichen's answer was as cold as a biting wind, ruthlessly rejecting her: "No."
My patience finally ran out, and I glared angrily at Jiang Yichen: "Then tell me, what good does it do you to keep me as a streamer? Do you really enjoy trapping me in your world?"
Jiang Yichen was speechless after my question; he probably hadn't thought about it at all.
Seeing Jiang Yichen's silence, I felt even more disappointed.
I couldn't be bothered to argue with Jiang Yichen any longer, so I simply stated my position coldly: "I've made up my mind. I'll shoot this commercial. If you really want to change the actor, then so be it."
