Chapter 33 Courier Room
Chapter 33 Courier Room
After three seconds of no response, Miao Yin knocked on the door again.
Her knocking was very regular, with consistent intervals and force, and it was precisely for this reason that the person inside finally dispelled their concerns.
A calm female voice came from the crack in the door: "Is that a human outside?"
"Yes."
As soon as he finished speaking, a slight moving sound could be heard from inside, and soon the door opened.
“Come in quickly,” she said.
So Miao Yin pulled Yan Shuzhou inside, and the woman closed and locked the door.
As soon as she entered, Miao Yin smelled a strong odor of rotting corpses, and she quickly pinpointed the source of the smell.
In the corner of the room, several large pieces of cardboard completely covered the protrusion underneath.
Two tall, muscular men carrying weapons emerged from behind the shelves.
A tall, imposing figure with tanned, dark yellow skin and a three-centimeter-long scar on his right cheek that exuded menacing power. He had a dozen or so dirty bandages wrapped around his waist, but his eyes were deep and sharp, like an eagle soaring over the plateau, showing no sign of fatigue.
The other person had a baby face, a youthful and shy appearance, round eyes, and a buzz cut with cradle cap. Although his face was a little pale, his eyes were clear and his expression was firm. The only regrettable thing was that he only had half of his right arm left.
The woman who moved the shelf back to the front door was the one who looked the most intact of the three.
She was rather thin, with short hair that barely covered her ears, yet she stood ramrod straight and very upright. Her eyes were slightly upturned, her nose was high and straight, and her demeanor was calm and composed. Although her face was somewhat fierce, she remained calm and self-possessed.
These three individuals, each with their own distinct temperament, maintained their sharp minds despite their disheveled state, preserving their individuality without giving up on themselves, and all of them were dressed in military uniforms.
The parcel room wasn't large. All the parcels had been unpacked, and the cardboard boxes were stacked together with signs of being run over. Used trash was placed in a large box, all neat and clean, clearly having been properly organized.
Miao Yin spoke first, introducing herself: "My name is Miao Yin, and this is my younger brother, Yan Shuzhou."
The man with the scar on his face did not respond immediately. He looked Miao Yin up and down with his sharp eyes before saying, "My name is Peng Si, a soldier. I am currently the captain of the Eagle Team of the Rescue Action Team under Jingzhou. These two are my subordinates, Deng Zhize and Qiu Jing."
The two men gave them a standard bow.
Miao Yin nodded to them: "I've seen many police officers, but this is the first time I've seen soldiers."
"The situation around here is very dangerous. How did you get in? Didn't you encounter any mutants along the way?" Peng Si stared at Miao Yin with undisguised sharp eyes, as if trying to see right through her.
A perfectly measured hint of doubt appeared on the girl's cool face. Under the other person's extremely intimidating gaze, she uncomfortably avoided his eyes.
"We came out to find supplies because we were completely out of food at home. We had just managed to find some when a mutant spotted us. Luckily, the mutant was small and not as powerful as the ones we had seen before. We attacked it a few times and then took the opportunity to run away."
"As we were coming here, we happened to see this door with a big hole in it. Without thinking twice, we hid inside. Then we found the footprints on the ground and wondered if there were any of our compatriots inside. So we tried it, and to our surprise, there really were!"
"But looking at it now, it seems you guys are more seriously injured." She glanced worriedly at the bandages on their bodies.
"A fierce battle?"
“We are here for a rescue operation,” said Deng Zhize, who has a baby face.
"Then how did you get trapped here?"
Deng Zhize glanced at his captain, and seeing that he didn't object, he began to explain.
"About a week ago, we received a distress message from Dongai Community, which indicated that more than 500 people were trapped in their homes. Our superiors immediately dispatched our Eagle Rescue Team to carry out the rescue."
"We learned about the situation in the community through the residents' group and made ample preparations before coming here, but..."
Deng Zhize suddenly stopped speaking, his expression filled with grief and a hint of barely perceptible anger. He calmed himself down for a moment before continuing.
"When we arrived, we found that the situation in the community was completely different from what the residents had described. The number of mutants far exceeded the number of equipment we had."
"We were besieged, and many of our brothers were killed." His youthful face was filled with the grief of losing friends.
Qiu Jing patted him on the shoulder and continued.
"In order to better preserve our strength, our team split into two parts. One part led the rescued survivors to break through the defenses, enter the security room from the property lobby, and then blow up the passage to prevent the mutants from escaping and causing greater harm. The other part, led by the captain, was responsible for covering the rear, which was us."
"After the passage was destroyed, we took advantage of the time when the mutants were affected by the explosion to hide in this courier station. There were originally five of us, but two of our comrades were too badly injured and couldn't hold on. They eventually sacrificed themselves, so we had to put them in there. Now there are only three of us left. We have been surviving on the weight loss meal replacements and snacks in the courier station."
At this point, a hint of bitterness appeared on Qiu Jing's usually calm face.
"However, we had already finished the food before you arrived."
Although their language was plain and uninteresting, those few words still revealed the extremely dangerous situation at the time, and these magnificent experiences could not be concealed.
Yan Shuzhou was also moved by these words, his face filled with pity and admiration.
Miao Yin frowned slightly and asked worriedly, "Is there no rescue?"
Qiu Jing said, "When we realized something was wrong, we reported it, but the rescue team couldn't get here quickly enough. Even if we redeployed the team, it would take time to prepare. If we rushed into a rescue before we understood the situation, we would only pay a higher price."
"Thank you for your hard work."
Qiu Jing shook her head: "It's just my duty."
Miao Yin took the bag off Yan Shuzhou, put it on the ground and opened it: "These are the supplies we just found in a small supermarket. You haven't eaten for a long time, have you? Take some to fill your stomachs."
Deng Zhize and Qiu Jing did not take it without permission, but looked at Peng Si together, waiting for him to make a decision.
Peng Si thought for a moment, then nodded: "Thank you."
"It should."
Peng Si and Deng Zhize were both injured, so they tried to stay still as much as possible to prevent their wounds from reopening. Once they found that there was no danger, they sat on the cardboard to rest, and Qiu Jing carried it for them.
Considering that these were supplies the other party had risked their lives to find, Qiu Jing didn't take much. She gave each of them a loaf of bread to fill their stomachs, and then opened a bottle of mineral water for the three of them to share.
The soldiers were very efficient; they sat on cardboard and quickly finished their food.
