Chapter 42 Temporary Settlement
Chapter 42 Temporary Settlement
Seven bewildered people stood in the gas station, staring at the convenience store in complete disarray after the group had left. It was like a locust plague…
It's so embarrassing, really embarrassing.
Morally, they were the supply team from the safe base, giving them the upper hand. In terms of physical strength, the seven of them, with three of them barely lifting a finger, had already taken down seven or eight of the opposing team, still holding the advantage. But in the end, they lost all their supplies, their entire day's work was for nothing!
It was already past 6 PM, and the temperature was still high, but the sun was about to set, and the sky was ablaze with fiery red clouds. 0788 no longer had any trucks to transport supplies. Even though there were several gas stations along the way back, there were no trucks to load goods, and they didn't have enough time to unload them.
Qin Yuan and Lin Yun knew that more zombies would come out after dark, and they would be more ferocious and faster than during the day.
Although Lu Yuan and his companions had heard about the habits of zombies on the radio, they had never actually faced zombies at night.
"We need to find a place to stay first. We can't wander around outside at night." Lin Yun put away his pistol and began to rationally plan the next step. As the former captain of the 0922 supply team, Lin Yun was much more reliable than Qin Yuan.
"Ho ho..."
"Cuckoo..."
The sounds of zombies could be heard in the distance, and some swaying figures could be vaguely seen emerging from various corners of the gas station.
"Get in the car first!" Gu Nanfeng unlocked the car remotely, Pei Sihao drove, he gave directions, and everyone else squeezed into the back seat and trunk.
Fortunately, this group came out empty-handed to look for supplies; otherwise, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun, two burly men over 180cm tall, would have had nowhere to put them.
As soon as Pei Sihao started the car, a zombie pounced on him. Fortunately, he stepped on the gas without hesitation, and the zombie swallowed a mouthful of exhaust fumes.
"Is this car also yours?" Qin Yuan asked, leaning back in the trunk. The car they were driving was the same model as their previous modified car. Although it had also been modified, it couldn't compare to the reinforcement and modifications of the previous car.
"Yeah, it got driven away earlier," Pei Sihao replied from the front. Gu Nanfeng, sitting next to him, was looking at an offline map on his phone, searching for the nearest place to stay.
"You guys are really something!" Gu Nanfeng had mentioned Pei Sihao's family background before, and Qin Yuan had also heard about Gu Nanfeng's family background when he participated in the new materials project in his early years, so he wasn't surprised for long by the appearance of this second G-Wagon.
"There's a residential area up ahead. We can go there and find an empty house." After getting into the car, Lin Yun, like Gu Nanfeng, opened his phone to find the nearest place to stay.
"Those guys from earlier probably came from this neighborhood," Lu Yuan said, searching on his old touchscreen phone. He noticed they hadn't seen any cars ahead of them since leaving the gas station; the G-Class's performance was far superior to their other vehicles.
Moreover, their dilapidated truck should have been able to catch up with that group of people, even though they should have been able to. So it's highly likely that the group knew another shortcut to the nearest residential area.
"Xiao Yuan is right, we need to look somewhere else." This community isn't very big, just four or five buildings. It's a building from over twenty years ago, but the occupancy rate is almost 100%. Even if we go there, there probably won't be any vacant rooms, and if there are, they'll probably be the kind of rooms that are unusable.
Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang were happy to have an easy time. After being with Lu Yuan and the others, they didn't have to worry about anything that required thinking. In Zhong Qiang's words, they were just emotionless fighting machines.
Gu Nanfeng quickly identified a popular tourist street about four or five kilometers ahead of this neighborhood. It was in a Chinese style and was under maintenance during the pandemic. Don't ask Gu Nanfeng how he knew; the answer is that it was also one of their family's businesses.
Although Gu Nanfeng's grandparents and parents were all involved in scientific research, his maternal grandparents were well-known figures in Beijing's business circles. Gu Nanfeng didn't like doing business, but fortunately, he had a strong-willed older sister, Gu Yining, who started her business career alongside her maternal grandparents before even graduating high school.
Following Gu Nanfeng's directions, Pei Sihao drove into this trendy street. He scanned his sign and entered immediately. Qin Yuan was somewhat surprised, "Is the power still on here?"
"This place is equipped with emergency circuits, and it's under closed maintenance, so there's not much power consumption since no one is around, which is why the emergency power supply has lasted until now," Gu Nanfeng explained briefly. Pei Sihao had been here a few times, and he and Gu Nanfeng had two large suites here. After entering, he no longer needed Gu Nanfeng to give directions and drove directly to the star-rated hotel at the very end.
They were very lucky and didn't encounter a single zombie along the way. Gu Nanfeng guessed that it was because it happened to be the Gu family's anniversary celebration, so everyone was on holiday.
As soon as the car arrived at the hotel lobby entrance, the sensor door opened automatically, and Pei Sihao stepped on the gas and drove in without a second thought. The lobby was so large that it could easily accommodate two or three cars.
As soon as the automatic door at the back of the car closed, Gu Nanfeng got out and found a switch in the corner of the lobby reception area, where he pressed it.
"Are all the windows in this lobby shatterproof?" Qin Yuan stepped forward and knocked on the glass to check if it was safe, only to find that it was indeed shatterproof glass.
"The door is locked. If there are no zombies inside, we are safe." Gu Nanfeng walked out from the front desk.
"If there are zombies in here, wouldn't we be trapped like turtles in a jar?" Yang Xiao suddenly asked.
Yang Xiao's probing question alerted everyone to look around cautiously, and sure enough, Lu Yuan spotted a figure.
He patted Pei Sihao beside him, glancing in that direction, but there was nothing there anymore. It was hard to tell if the other person was human or a zombie; the hotel was huge, and it could have vanished in a flash.
The group carefully slung their backpacks over their shoulders and pressed the elevator button. The resort hotel wasn't very tall, only six stories, and Gu Nanfeng and Pei Sihao's room was on the top floor. Unsure if there were any people or zombies on the floors or in the emergency exits, they figured the elevator was the safest option. At most, there might be a car full of zombies; they could fight them if they could, and run if they couldn't.
The team now has three sharpshooters plus Yang Xiao, who is only half-baked. The four of them found cover at the back and set up their guns and crossbows. Lu Yuan originally wanted to press the elevator button, but Gu Nanfeng pushed him away, saying that there were too many people and he was afraid of causing trouble. Moreover, he was now the team's warehouse, and safety was the top priority. So he was pushed to hide with Pei Sihao.
Zhong Qiang and Gu Nanfeng assigned tasks. Gu Nanfeng hid by the elevator and pressed the buttons, while Zhong Qiang stood in the middle to attract the zombies. As a physical education student, he was fast. If the elevator was full of zombies, he would lead them around the lobby so the other four could shoot them. Although it was the most dangerous task, Zhong Qiang was very happy. He felt that he had finally found his place in the team.
