Chapter 180 Temporary Camp
Chapter 180 Temporary Camp
Unlike Lu Yuan's car, the atmosphere in Ji Lang's lead car was much more serious.
"Why did your South China base come to such a far place to carry out the mission?" After the car drove out of the parking lot, Zhao Qi relaxed and sat in the passenger seat, turning back to ask Ji Lang.
"How did you know we were here on a mission?" Ji Lang and Lin Yun were immediately on guard. Even if all mission arrangements were shared among the four bases, it shouldn't be possible for every rescue team to know.
“Yesterday, we received a rescue message, and as soon as we arrived, we encountered your team being besieged by zombies.” Zhao Qi said, lighting a cigarette in his hand. Unlike the uncle in Lu Yuan’s car, he didn’t just get a cigarette for himself without asking Ji Lang and Lin Yun. After all, cigarettes are now a scarce commodity.
"However, they weren't as lucky as you," Zhao Qi said, taking a drag of his cigarette. "When we arrived, few of them were even breathing."
"You received a rescue message?" Lin Yun asked, somewhat puzzled. The South China Base hadn't replied to any of the messages they sent, so why would they send a rescue mission to another base?
“Yes, it was sent from the base. They said that the South China base sent two teams deep into Beijing, but neither of them returned with any news, so they asked the North China base to send someone over to check.” Zhao Qi glanced at Lin Yun, then took another puff of his cigarette. “Our team is here right now, so I came over.”
Ji Lang and Lin Yun didn't respond immediately, but sat quietly in the back. Zhao Qi, in the front, glanced at them in the rearview mirror, smiled, and continued:
"Among the people we rescued yesterday, there was Wen Zhou, the captain of your South China Base's Fourth Rescue Team, and two superhumans from your Third Rescue Team. They said your team might still be here, so we came back to check again."
"That must be Liu Jia and Wang Sanhai. They really did run into Zhong Qiang's team." Ji Lang smiled and saw that Zhao Qi had already smoked down to the cigarette butt but still couldn't bear to throw it away. He then took out the bag that Lu Yuan had given him that morning from his pocket, quickly opened it, and handed two cigarettes to Zhao Qi and the driver. "Thank you so much, Captain Zhao. Otherwise, as the team leader, I wouldn't know how to tell their families when we get back."
"You're welcome." Zhao Qi was quite envious when he saw that the cigarettes Ji Lang took out of his pocket were brand new, not at all like they had changed hands several times in the apocalypse. It at least showed that they were enjoying themselves in the South China base.
"Captain Zhao, how come there are still temporary camps in Beijing?" The atmosphere created by the cigarette made both sides relax a lot, and Ji Lang took the opportunity to find out.
"The North China base is going to be relocated, and the advance troops will set up some temporary camps along the way." This was the same reply that Lu Yuan and his group had received. However, Ji Lang and Lin Yun were not like Lu Yuan and his fellow students from the southwest region. They both knew that if the North China base was to be relocated, no matter which base it was to be relocated to, it would not pass through Beijing, let alone set up any temporary camps in Beijing.
“That’s good. It’s really too cold here at the North China base. It would be better to go to the Central China or South China base,” Lin Yun added.
Actually, Northeast China is already quite cold in winter, but the virus outbreak occurred in summer. So, apart from the fact that East China was overwhelmed too quickly due to the large population and the rapid spread of the virus, and that no East China base was established in time, bases were successfully established in Northeast, Southwest, Central and Southern China.
Of course, the reason why a base wasn't built in East China in time was also due to factors such as the low-lying terrain, the abundance of tall buildings, and the sudden rise in sea levels. Therefore, a large number of survivors from East China were eventually sent to the South China and Central China bases in batches.
"How long will it take to get to the temporary camp?" Ji Lang flicked the ash from his cigarette and watched their car emerge from the underground tunnel onto the snow-covered ground.
"It'll be about another half hour," Zhao Qi said, glancing out the window. "The temporary camp is underground in the Great Hall of the People. We'll have to go into the underground highway later."
"Hmm." Ji Lang finished speaking, stubbed out his cigarette, and seeing that Zhao Qi in front had also finished his cigarette, handed him two more. Lin Yun next to him remained silent, simply gazing quietly out the car window. Even after entering the underground highway and into complete darkness, he observed everything intently.
They drove in silence, and soon the four cars entered an underground parking lot that was much larger than the previous research institute's parking lot. The ceiling height here was even high enough for a container truck to pass through.
"We've arrived. This is the longest the car can go. We need to get off." The lead car stopped first, and after Zhao Qi, Ji Lang, and Lin Yun got off, the driver drove the car to the designated parking space.
The car behind them also drove off as soon as Lu Yuan, Yang Xiao, and Zhong Qiang got out, without the man in the passenger seat getting out. Then, two more cars quickly drove past them.
Yang Xiao looked in the direction the car had driven off, but there was no trace of exhaust fumes left. He pursed his lips and followed Ji Lang and Lin Yun with Lu Yuan and the others, walking with Zhao Qi to a safety exit.
The emergency exit gate was locked. Zhao Qi walked over and it was opened after he scanned the code. Lu Yuan and the others were a little surprised that there was electricity here. Did the temporary camp need electricity? Weren't they supposed to stay for two days and then leave?
"The camp requires that anyone without a file must be checked and registered." Zhao Qi ushered Ji Lang and the other four inside.
Upon entering, Lu Yuan discovered that it wasn't a stairwell leading up or down, but rather an examination room of about ten square meters. There were two small cubicles on either side, presumably for scanning and physical examinations. In the middle was a rectangular counter large enough for two people to sit side-by-side, but it was empty at the moment. Yang Xiao peeked inside and saw a computer on the table under the counter.
"Brother Zhao, you're back?" Just as Lu Yuan was about to go over and take a look, a door behind the counter suddenly opened, and a young man ran out carrying a cup of instant noodles.
"They're back. Let's register them." After saying that, Zhao Qi stepped back behind Ji Lang and Lin Yun, who had stayed at the back and hadn't approached the counter.
“We are all registered soldiers at the South China Base. The North China Base should have synchronized the data as well, so we don’t need to register anymore.” Ji Lang glanced back at Zhao Qi, who had blocked the doorway, seemingly not intending to let them leave.
“We have our own rules for this temporary camp.” Zhao Qi, with the cigarette Ji Lang had just given him dangling from his lips, hadn’t lit it yet. He nodded toward the counter.
The young man at the counter quickly put down his instant noodles, skillfully turned on the computer, and then Zhao Qi's voice came from behind, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. As you can see, Xiao Wei hasn't eaten yet, so don't keep others waiting."
“This is not a temporary camp at the North China base.” Lin Yun also turned to look at Zhao Qi.
