Chapter 168 Battle
Chapter 168 Battle
Amidst the sounds of drums and horns, the two armies met, but instead of engaging in combat, they slowly came to a halt and formed ranks.
Xuanfeng stood solemnly at the front of the horse, holding a long sword.
Behind him were all the soldiers who were on high alert.
Their eyes were fixed intently on the front, the banners of the army fluttering fiercely in the wind, and each of them carried an unwavering determination to never retreat.
As the atmosphere grew tense, the leading barbarian noble arrogantly raised his hand and said contemptuously, "I advise you to surrender. Without our commander, you cannot defeat us."
"If you obediently kneel down and surrender, at least you can save your life."
He curled the corners of his mouth in a contemptuous smile, as if he felt he had the situation under control.
Upon hearing this, Xuanfeng merely gave a cold laugh, then turned to Xie Yan and asked, "Is he still half asleep?"
Xie Yan stroked her chin, her face grave. "How can you talk like that? We must take good care of people like this!"
"What kind of person?"
"Someone with a problem in their brain."
Barbarian nobles: "..."
His smile froze instantly, his face turned ashen, and he said grimly, "Who are you calling mentally unstable?"
"ah!"
Xie Yan looked surprised. He covered his mouth with his hand, leaned close to Xuan Feng, and whispered loudly, "Did I not name names just now? Why is he in such a hurry? Could it be..."
Barbarian nobles: "..."
His face was grim, and he sized up Xie Yan with a fierce look before suddenly laughing disdainfully, "It seems you really have no one else left, that you would send someone like this to the battlefield..."
Before his mocking remark had even finished, the person who should have been furious completely ignored him and instead turned to whisper to Xuanfeng, "Hey, look, that guy looks like a dog."
Xuanfeng: "Which one?"
Xie Yan: "The one who's speaking."
Barbarian nobles: "..."
Under the curious gazes of the crowd, his face turned pale and then red, and finally he could only slowly shut his mouth.
An eerie silence fell over the field.
But the silence didn't last long before a sinister glint flashed in the man's eyes.
Before anyone could react, he suddenly pulled out a bow from behind his back. As the string was fully drawn, a sharp arrow pierced the wind and flew straight toward Xie Yan's chest!
"careful!"
Under the tense gazes of everyone, Xie Yan's expression remained unchanged. He didn't even move an inch; he simply curled the corners of his mouth into a smile.
In the blink of an eye, the arrow pierced the wind and came flying, but when it was less than a finger's width away from Xie Yan, it was blocked by a long sword placed in front of him.
The person who used the long sword to block the attack for Xie Yan was none other than Xuan Feng, who was standing next to him.
Xuanfeng's expression darkened slightly as he looked at the arrow, his eyes turning cold.
"Heh, what a shameless fellow, only capable of sneak attacks."
Upon hearing this, the barbarian nobleman sneered and said, "Hmph, this is the battlefield. Who cares about propriety and morality? It's all about skill."
He chuckled, and as he spoke, he drew the bowstring again, the arrowhead whistling as it shot out several more arrows.
This time, the target was directly aimed at Xuanfeng's head.
Xuanfeng's eyes darkened, and with a swift swing of his longsword, he unleashed a burst of sword energy, cleanly severing several arrows into the ground.
This was as if it were a signal. After deflecting the arrow, Xuanfeng raised his sword and said in a deep and resolute voice, "Kill!"
At a command, the army charged out, and Xuanfeng's sword sliced through the air, bringing with it a sharp sword aura, heading directly towards the barbarian nobleman.
Barbarian tribes were known for their cavalry, and the horses they rode were the finest warhorses, tall, strong, and quite wild.
The two armies clashed. Although Xuanfeng's side had a slight numerical advantage, the combat power of the barbarian cavalry could not be ignored.
For a time, the two armies were locked in fierce combat.
Seeing Xuanfeng approaching, the barbarian nobleman immediately turned his horse around and retreated into his own army.
Under the cover of the soldiers, he held a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other, secretly firing arrows at Xuanfeng who was rushing in.
He hid behind the soldiers, raised his chin triumphantly, looked at Xuanfeng provocatively, and once again drew the bowstring taut.
But this time, before he could even shoot his arrow, an even sharper whooshing sound suddenly rang out beside him!
He didn't even have time to react; he could only catch a glimpse of a cold glint flashing like lightning as it pierced through the crowd and headed towards him out of the corner of his eye!
With a "whoosh," the arrow didn't kill him, but grazed his fingers and then struck his bow directly.
The force was so great that it split his arrow shaft in two!
The barbarian nobleman was immediately terrified. He looked up and saw Xie Yan, who was standing on horseback in the distance, smiling at him. Then he raised his bow and fired another arrow straight at him!
His expression changed drastically, and he instinctively tried to dodge.
Unexpectedly, the arrow was not aimed at his vital points, but grazed the body of the warhorse beneath him.
The warhorse let out a neigh, seemingly startled by the sharp arrow's energy, and reared up on its front hooves, actually throwing the barbarian nobleman to the ground.
The man tumbled heavily to the ground, rolling several times before barely avoiding being trampled by the horse's hooves.
He gritted his teeth and got up from the ground, cursing Xie Yan fiercely. In a fit of rage, he snatched a horse, intending to make a comeback.
However, before he could mount his horse, a gust of wind suddenly came from behind him. He turned around instinctively and saw a figure riding up on horseback.
The soldiers who tried to intercept him were shot down one after another by arrows. He didn't even have time to see his opponent clearly before he was stabbed by a sword.
The longsword pierced his body in the exact same spot where the scout who had brought the news had been pierced by an arrow.
The barbarian nobleman's body crashed to the ground. His eyes widened in disbelief, and before he could utter a word, Xuanfeng cleaved his head off with a single sword strike.
In this battle, the two armies did not fight for long before the barbarian leaders were killed one after another.
His cavalry was immediately leaderless and their morale was thrown into chaos. They were quickly routed by Xuanfeng's army.
Xie Yan reined in his horse and stopped in the center of the battlefield, watching the enemy flee, but his expression did not relax in the slightest.
The battered and bruised Xuanfeng rode up, exhausted, and asked, "What happened? Is something wrong?"
Xie Yan frowned slightly. "Don't you think it's going a little too smoothly?"
Xuanfeng was startled. He looked up and found that the remnants of the barbarian army had vanished without a trace.
Their movements were so swift, it was as if they had planned their escape all along.
