Chapter 315: Confession
Chapter 315: Confession
Lin Xinghai considered the question carefully for a moment before answering, "When we encountered those three ’Hunters,’ we maintained a dominant position the entire time. We killed all 300,000 Zombies, and I even chased after them at the end."
"I estimate the Mutated Zombies won’t come tonight. Since I’m a direct threat to their lives, they should be extremely cautious, even with a probing attack. They’ll probably wait a while before trying again."
"Of course, all Zombies are bloodthirsty and violent. Even if the Mutated Zombies are intelligent, they can’t think rationally for long. I expect they’ll attack again before the branch base is completed."
After hearing Lin Xinghai’s analysis, Lin Zhengyang let out a long sigh of relief. "I’m not asking for much. As long as the Mutated Zombies don’t come tonight, we’ll be fine."
"Er... that’s just my estimate. I can’t guarantee it 100%! Why don’t you have the Strategy Department run their own calculations?" Lin Xinghai said quickly.
After all, it was all just speculation on his part. If he was wrong and caused Lin Zhengyang to misjudge the situation, it would be a huge problem.
"I already had the Strategy Department analyze it, and they said the same thing. But hearing it from you is more reassuring," Lin Zhengyang said with a chuckle.
Lin Xinghai felt a little awkward, not sure how to respond to that.
Lin Zhengyang had a lot on his plate, so he didn’t keep Lin Xinghai for long. After they shared a cup of tea, Lin Xinghai took his leave.
When he returned to the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps camp, a large bonfire was already blazing in an open area just outside.
Someone had even found a high-powered sound system somewhere, which now stood by the bonfire. A mercenary was holding a microphone, screaming his lungs out to some rock song.
Lin Xinghai thought the singer was off-key and his voice cracked on the high notes, but the surrounding crowd was cheering wildly, completely hyped up.
He shook his head. ’I guess I just can’t appreciate the art of this new era.’
Since it was a bonfire party, there was naturally no shortage of food and drink. Smaller charcoal fires for grilling were set up in clusters around the main bonfire.
These spots were nearly all full. Lin Xinghai could see that it wasn’t just members of the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps present. Many members from other Mercenary Corps had come over as well, especially from the ones that had joined today’s Zombie hunt.
The bonfire party seemed to be growing larger and larger, as new fires were being lit in the distance.
Lin Xinghai paid no mind to any of this. He walked straight toward a nearby fire, because Liu Miaomiao was there.
The people sitting here were all high-ranking members of the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps. As Lin Xinghai approached, Roger, without needing to be told, tactfully stood up and gave him his seat.
Lin Xinghai didn’t stand on ceremony, plopping down right next to Liu Miaomiao.
Liu Miaomiao, who had been talking with Shen Han, just then noticed Lin Xinghai’s arrival. Her face lit up. "Oh! You’re back! General Lin called you over, is everything okay?"
"I’m fine." Lin Xinghai shook his head. "He just wanted to ask about today’s Zombie horde."
"That’s good. I saved two chicken wings for you. I hope you like them," Liu Miaomiao said, picking up a nearby insulated container. She opened it to reveal two glistening, golden-brown chicken wings, freshly grilled and still steaming.
Lin Xinghai didn’t hold back, picking up a wing and taking a bite. He wasn’t sure if it was because of a honey glaze or something else, but it was incredibly sweet.
"You’re a great cook. This is delicious. By the way, what do you want to eat? I’ll grill it for you," Lin Xinghai said, finishing the wing in just a few bites. He then picked up a metal skewer and asked.
"I’ll like anything you make," Liu Miaomiao said boldly, though her cheeks were flushed red.
Lin Xinghai smiled, skewered some beef meatballs and a few other things, and started grilling.
Liu Miaomiao sat beside him, quietly watching him grill and listening to the others chat about everything under the sun. A sweet smile blossomed on her face.
’The apocalypse may be dangerous and cruel, but it has its warm moments, too.’
Lin Xinghai’s gaze occasionally drifted to the beauty beside him. They were sitting so close he could even smell the faint, pleasant fragrance from her.
"Miaomiao," Lin Xinghai said softly.
"Hmm?" Liu Miaomiao responded with a lazy hum.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" Lin Xinghai asked, getting straight to the point.
Their feelings for each other had intensified dramatically lately, and things had often been ambiguous between them, but neither had taken that final step.
This was because Lin Xinghai had been waiting for the right moment to confess his feelings.
This cozy, warm atmosphere felt just right.
When Liu Miaomiao heard his question, she froze for a moment. A happy smile then spread across her face, and she nodded. "Yes!"
She had no reason to be shy about it. Although she’d only been living in the apocalypse for a month, she understood its cruelty all too well—if you miss out on someone or something, you might never get another chance.
The bonfire party grew more and more lively as the night went on. By the end, not only had the Mercenary Corps on good terms with Lin Xinghai shown up, but even a group from the Military Department, led by Zhang Yue, had arrived.
The bonfire party lasted for a full five hours before people started to disperse around midnight.
That night, just as Lin Xinghai had predicted, no Mutated Zombies dared to cause any trouble.
Of course, with so many people gathered at the branch base, it naturally attracted some nearby groups of Zombies, so there were certainly a few harassing attacks.
But the largest of these was a horde of barely 1,000 Zombies.
A horde of that size, against the massive forces stationed at the branch base, was like an ant trying to shake a tree. It wasn’t even enough to warrant bothering Lin Xinghai and the others.
...
「The next day」
Lin Xinghai organized his teams and went out to hunt Zombies again.
Throughout the day, although they triggered one Zombie horde after another, Lin Xinghai deliberately kept them under control, never letting any of them exceed 30,000 Zombies.
A horde of that size posed no threat whatsoever to their massive joint force of 20 Mercenary Corps.
Moreover, having learned their lesson from the day before, nearly every Mercenary Corps that came out was carrying ten times their usual amount of ammunition.
With that much ammo, they could fight without holding back, not worrying about running out. Forget a horde of 300,000; they could take on a horde of 500,000.
It was a shame, really. Everyone was raring to go, eager to flex their muscles, but they didn’t encounter a single Mutated Zombie the entire day.
Of course, the haul for the various Mercenary Corps was still enormous. While it couldn’t compare to the previous day, their earnings were still about half of what they had made then.
One could only imagine that if they could keep up this level of profit every day, every single Mercenary Corps there would make an absolute killing.
And Lin Xinghai thought these peaceful, Point-earning days would last for at least a few more.
But he never expected that just as the second day’s night bled into the early morning hours, the alarms at the branch base would suddenly blare.
That was the alarm reserved for only one thing: the attack of a large-scale Zombie horde.
