Chapter 1049: It’s Worth a Try
Qi Er and You Er, although not lacking courage, had never killed anyone. Suddenly seeing so many corpses made them uneasy, and they no longer wished to stay at the inn. They quickly packed their bags, mounted their horses, and headed towards the county town with the magistrate.
Along the way, the magistrate eagerly engaged them in conversation, and Qi Er and You Er responded politely.
Upon arrival at the county town, night had already fallen. The magistrate said, "Young masters, why not stay at the county government? The backyard is occupied only by my family. It’s more convenient to stay there, and mainly, your horses stand out too much."
Qi Er and You Er thought that staying at the county government had its advantages, such as not needing to leave someone on watch at night.
Everyone hadn’t slept well last night. If they left someone on watch again today, how would they have the energy to continue their journey tomorrow?
The two exchanged glances and nodded simultaneously.
The magistrate was greatly delighted and immediately led them into the backyard of the county government.
The first thing Qi Er and You Er did upon entering was to settle the horses. They fed them carrots and prepared fodder, then went into the courtyard.
The magistrate’s wife and children stayed in the second courtyard, while Qi Er and You Er were placed in the first courtyard.
Seeing that it was still early for dinner, they decided to bathe and wash their hair first.
During their travels, they found the inn’s bathtubs dirty and hadn’t bathed.
In the backyard, the magistrate’s household staff, maids, and the lady of the house were busy.
The wife, lifting her skirt and moving swiftly, entered the kitchen, "Be quick and attentive with your tasks. These are the young masters from the households of Lord Chief Minister and Lord Commander."
"They are accustomed to grand things; at least our offerings should be presentable."
After leaving the kitchen, the wife entered her daughter’s room. Her fourteen-year-old daughter, already tall and graceful, was changing clothes with the maid’s assistance.
The wife glanced at her daughter, frowned, "This outfit’s color is too bright. Now that it’s evening, the lights will make lighter colors stand out more."
The wife personally selected an ochre yellow top and an ivory pomegranate skirt from the wardrobe.
After changing clothes, the young lady sat in front of the dressing mirror to redo her makeup.
Seeing the maid apply makeup and fix her daughter’s hair, inserting a golden hairpin, the wife quickly shook her head, "Not this, use a few jeweled flowers instead."
Those young masters surely wouldn’t favor a girl adorned with a head full of golden hairpins like a nouveau riche.
The wife carefully picked several jeweled flowers to place in her daughter’s hair, adjusting them until satisfied.
She waved the maids away, then whispered, "Later, when you meet the young masters with me, remember to be gracious, gentle, and elegant."
The young lady nervously tugged at her clothes, "Mother, do you think they will like me?"
The wife shook her head, "Who knows?"
"They’re young, prone to impulse and emotion, but—"
She glanced at her daughter, who was certainly pretty but not breathtaking, "We don’t have to insist on anything. If it works out, wonderful; if not, it’s beyond our control. Meeting them and forming good relations is advantageous too."
The young lady nodded.
The maid entered then and said, "Madam, the young masters have finished bathing, and snacks have just been served to satiate them a bit."
The wife asked sternly, "How are things in the kitchen?"
"Almost ready, dinner will be served soon."
The wife took her daughter’s hand and stood up, "Let’s go, accompany me to the front yard."
They proceeded towards the front yard with the maid.
